Is Virgin’s Cape Town to London Flight Making a Comeback?

Virgin Atlantic, one of Richard Branson’s midas-touched enterprises, recently Tweeted a tease for an upcoming new route.

This comes after an announcement from the company’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Darrin Thomas, that Virgin Atlantic would be actively employing 84 new direct destinations upon completion of Heathrow airport’s third runway. While some followers began speculating that the Tweet was alluding to Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, the reference to Signal Hill’s Noon Gun was a dead giveaway to any Capetonian.

If the whole palava seems like a touch of deja vu, then that’s not amiss. Virgin in fact used to have a direct flight between Cape Town and the UK, but pulled it a few years back in favour of direct flights only to O.R. Tambo International in Johannesburg.

The revitalisation of the flight route is welcome to Cape Town locals and foreign travellers alike, as British Airways is currently the sole provider of a direct Cape Town to London flight. Thomas Cook previously offered some healthy competition, but the budget airline fell into liquidation in September last year.

Even though it will be a waiting game to hear the official announcement of the opening of the direct Virgin route, we’re pretty confident in our guess. Watch this space for further developments!
