The True Experience of South Africa’s Wildlife

South Africa has so much to offer in terms of beauty. It’s one thing to visit the country and admire the nature, but to truly experience the wilderness at its finest, one needs to venture to one of the many game reserves scattered all over the country.

Kruger National Park

You can’t visit South Africa and not go to the Kruger National Park. Spread over 2 million hectares, the game reserve is one of the biggest in the world and contains all of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo) as well as many other indigenous animals to spot.

Pilanesberg Game Reserve

Pilanesberg is one of the most easily accessible game reserves in South Africa. It is a protected area for the Big Five, so you can expect to spot a couple of these here too. Another great thing about this game reserve is that it is free of malaria, giving you one less thing to worry about on your travels.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Situated in the Northern Cape, Kgalagadi Tronsfrontier Park is known for its red sand dunes and dry riverbeds. The wildlife includes springbok and wildebeest which migrate according to the seasons, as well as predators such as black-maned lions and a number of raptors.

Mapungubwe National Park

Stretching over 28000 hectares, Mapungubwe National Park is a beautiful game reserve with great historical significance. There is a variety of wildlife and incredible views, and is well-known for the sandstone formations, baobab trees and riverside forests which fill the area.

Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Sabi Sands is a private game reserve which offers an up-close wildlife experience. Animals roam freely and there are plenty of possible leopard sightings which make this one of the most memorable game reserves to visit. The Sand and Sabi rivers flow through the reserve, adding to its biodiversity and to the experience.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the Big Five as well as much other rare-to-find wildlife such as cheetas, aardwolf, and brown hyena. The area is also free of malaria and has a very diverse set of animals, offering some of the best experiences when it comes to spotting interesting animals and their activities.

When visiting South Africa, it goes without saying that you need to go and see one or two game reserves. You can find yourself immersed in nature and spot incredible animals that you won’t see anywhere else in the world. It’s a once in a life-time experience that you will want to experience more than just once.
